LEADERSHIP

John Wallace - CEO

John is a data geek who writes left-handed but bats right-handed. Always the entrepreneur, he put himself through school by farming soybeans, waiting tables, and finding a paying client that doubled as an MBA internship project. In 2003, John successfully founded the analytic consulting firm that has grown into DataSong and led its expansion into big data applications for customer buying intelligence. He was previously with the SAS Institute Analytical Consulting group, which he's glad he worked at… and also glad he left. John holds an MBA in Decision Science from George Washington University.

I’m married to big data but started dating her before she was popular.

Mike DeVries - President & COO

Mike leads DataSong business operations. He thrives on working with customers to build great business relationships and believes that putting people first is the #1 ingredient in a culture of great customer service. Mike led a global sales and services team of 350+ while at OpenText, worked hands-on to sign up the first 25 customers at GoodData, and led Instill to record breaking business results and a successful sale to Accel-KKR. Mike began his career at GE where he developed an interest in fact-based decision making as well as the cultural dynamics of technology adoption and change in large organizations. When not working, Mike is a passionate yacht racer who can be founded puttering around the garden when the wind isn't up. Mike graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara, has been married 29 years, and has three kids.

Helping customers make big decisions is the real value in big data.

Traci Lee Chu - VP, Marketing

Traci is a San Francisco native with almost 20 years of marketing experience, including multi-channel lead/revenue generation, strategy, marketing automation, forecasting and analytics. She joined DataSong after working with the team as a client and was most recently the VP of Marketing and CRM at Bella Pictures. Previously, she developed and implemented strategies and marketing programs for home furnishings retailer Williams-Sonoma Inc, and Broderbund Software Company. Traci received her BA from University of California, Riverside. Nothing makes her happier than a cinnamon-dolce latte in the morning.

Trying to answer the tough questions without the right insights is like a cup of decaf: What’s the point?

Phil Corrin - VP, User Experience

Phil is a proud Liverpudlian, with the Beatles and Liverpool Football Club obsessions to prove it. He earned a BSc (Hons) in Applied Statistics from cold and foggy Newcastle, before spending nearly a decade in cold and foggy London working in Management Consulting. He helped grow a successful small firm with clients in telecommunications, travel, financial services and the public sector whilst honing his reputation as a pun-master. Phil was thrilled to arrive on the sunny, warm, and beautiful California shores in 2003, only to realize that San Francisco is actually cold and foggy. As employee number two at DataSong he has ‘enjoyed’ numerous biking routes to get to each and every HQ office. Phil champions the user experience and designs automation solutions for many of our analytical offerings.

It’s always data day fun at DataSong!

Jeremy Davis - VP, Engineering

Jeremy is a Seattle-based software engineer with 14 years of experience in the full product life cycle, from concept to end of life. Prior to joining DataSong, Jeremy spent more than a decade creating and shipping many hosted and continuously updated SaaS products such as the GridPoint Energy Management System, the V2Green Electric Vehicle Management System, and the AccessLine Conferencing Service. Jeremy has a BS in computer science from Iowa State University. He enjoys hiking the many trails and climbing the many mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

The hardest part is having too many great ideas and having to choose which ones not to do.

Neil Hillis, PhD - VP, Analytics

Neil is our resident rocket scientist. Some of his favorite childhood memories are of looking through a telescope in his backyard. After obtaining his PhD in Astrophysics from the University of California, Irvine, Neil realized that turning his love of astronomy into a career would destroy the passion, so he turned to another useful skill he had picked up along the way called SAS. As a senior technical architect, Neil has designed, developed and implemented a variety of complex analytical applications for retail, automotive, and healthcare customers.

Science is going to save us. We are dependent on future generations to be smarter than we are.

Bala Kandula - VP, Client Services

From a small town in India, but with big dreams and ambition, Bala found his way to Texas Tech University and came out with a Masters in Management Information Systems. After delving deep into the IT world, Bala founded a software development firm in India and merged it with DataSong and now manages it as their offshore team. Bala’s experience includes both architecting applications and managing development teams. As a senior technical architect for DataSong, Bala has designed systems for the financial, retail, automotive, healthcare and legal sectors.

Some dream in black & white. Some dream in color. We dream in Data.

Rakesh Menon, PhD - Regional Director, Singapore

Be it Numerology or Statistical models Rakesh loves the stories that numbers tell him. Trained as a Civil Engineer, the prospect of working in the sun, swayed him towards an office bound job in a research environment which got him looking at numbers - and he never looked back. 17 years in the analytics arena has seen him work across various projects across multiple industries from manufacturing, consumer electronics, healthcare, finance and more. Prior to joining DataSong, he was a Senior Vice President at Citibank Singapore. Though Rakesh has a Master's in Civil and Financial Engineering as well as a Phd in Text Mining, his biggest teachers have been his two daughters and he is still learning from them:)

Numbers rule the world. But as data geeks we rule Numbers.

Srini Renganathan - Assistant General Manager

Srini leads the DataSong India Lab. Prior to joining DataSong, he was a Senior Principal Member, Technical in Oracle. He started his career as X-Windows and Motif Programmer and spent the next eighteen years in designing, developing, and managing various billing and rating products related to the telecom industry. Srini holds an MBA in Accounting and Finance from Keller Graduate School. In addition, Srini is a fanatic field hockey player turned USPTR certified tennis coach – to coach only his two sons.

Enjoy playing a vital role in the human race, either in person, call records, or through transactions...

Antoine St-Pierre - VP, Analytics

Antoine left his native (French) Canada for California universities and never left (although he misses the snow and the cold). He came to the world of analytics and big data armed with his graduate training in economics, familiarity with business intelligence platforms and most of all a long-developed appreciation for data insights on business problems. His academic background and consulting track record, including litigation support and forecasting, in a number of industries give him a deep understanding of marketing forces that he is more than happy to share, along with his knowledge of analytical tools, with clients, new and longstanding.

We see ourselves as business partners, getting a deep understanding of not only business problems but also the dynamics that gave rise to them.

Tess Nesbitt, PhD - Director of Analytics

Since I realized my career as a sports star was probably not going to pan out (I’m only 5'-4 and a half), I decided to fall back onto my second passion as a mathlete. From a very young age, my dad brainwashed my sister and I into thinking math was cool and enrolled us in every “nerd” program there was in our area. Little did I know that thanks to this I would soon become that nerd that I once dreaded and laughed at ( I like to think I am a cool nerd though). After falling in love with the beauty and elegance of probability and statistics in undergrad at Santa Clara University and pursuing it further in graduate school at UCLA (who doesn't love the Law of Large Numbers?), I felt like I was transformed into a much more intelligent consumer of information (and better at saving my money than than some of my other friends who didn’t understand what a negative expectation really meant during trips to Vegas). Upon graduating with a doctorate, my fondness for UCLA and the subject of statistics enticed me to accept a position as a teacher in the very same department from which I graduated. While happily employed in that position, I randomly learned from my mom one sunny afternoon that a woman in her exercise class had a son who worked for a company in the bay area, where I always wanted to return, that needed a statistician. I made the trip over to the cozy little nook that was the old DataSong office and the rest is history.

Nicole Lindner, Phd - Consultant

Early on, I was a science geek who became fascinated by experimental psychology—think reverse-engineering the human mind with the view that “data or it didn’t happen”. I pursued that interest in graduate school at UVA, where my graduate advisor cofounded Project Implicit, which was (and is) developing a robust web-based infrastructure for behavioral research and education. We could collect more data in a weekend than most experimental psychologists collect in a year, and I loved the challenge of developing web applications and wrangling high-volume data. By the time I earned my Ph.D., I had realized that my passion was for answering questions with data, not being an academic. After my fiancé and I relocated from humid Virginia to southern California, I tried my hand at teaching statistics and working in a corporate environment before finding my way to DataSong.

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data.
